Southeast Alaska ServSafe® Training

The ServSafe® Manager Course is the most widely recognized Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) course. Completion of the ServSafe® Manager Course and exam demonstrates knowledge and competency in food safety practices essential for preventing foodborne illnesses in food service operations.

In Alaska, food establishments must have at least one person with a valid CFPM certification to oversee food safety practices. The ServSafe® Manager Certification, developed by the National Restaurant Association, is the industry-leading CFPM.

Sitka residents are welcome to attend the February or March classes, which are conveniently scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. making it possible to arrive and return to Sitka in the same day via Alaska Airlines flight 73 and 70.

About the ServSafe® Manager Course

About the class

The class and exam are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., unless otherwise published. Participants should arrive 15 minutes early to check-in. The class will break for approximately one (1) hour around noon. The class consists of in-person instruction and videos.

The class is intended to review the topics found within the ServSafe® Manager Book. Once you have registered and paid for the class, the book will be mailed to you at the address provided in your registration. Please read the book in advance to prepare for the class.

About the exam

The exam is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m., unless otherwise published. The exam consists of 90 multiple-choice questions; examinees have two (2) hours to complete the exam, unless testing accommodations have been approved by the National Restaurant Association.

Examinees should arrive at least 15 minutes early to check-in. Examinees must present a government-issued photo ID. Exams offered in conjunction with a class will be offered by paper form. Exam answers will be entered onto an Exam Answer Sheet (bubble form).

For your privacy, do not disclose your disability; after receiving your email, you will receive a response with instructions to request accommodations directly from the National Restaurant Association.

Interpreters and readers: If you are approved for an accommodation including an interpreter or reader, the examinee is responsible for procuring such service.

How long is the certification valid?

Five (5) years

Is the certification valid in other states?

Yes, ServSafe® Manager certification is the leading Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) and is recognized in any jurisdiction that accepts an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited CFPM.

Do I have to take the class?

No, for those that have previously taken the class or held a ServSafe® Manager Certification, the class is not required.

What score do I need to pass the exam?

A score of 70% is required to pass the exam.

When will I know if I passed?

Paper-based exams: Exams will be shipped to the Nation Restaurant Association in Chicago via FedEx Express within one to two business days of completion of the class (unless otherwise specified). Exam scores are usually posted within four business days of receipt by the National Restaurant Association.

Online exams: Scores will be available immediately upon completion of the exam.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You may retake the exam according to the National Restaurant Association’s retake policy.

You can retest only if you did not pass the examination, or if your current certification is expiring. You will need to purchase a new exam each time you need to retest. You can take the examination twice within 30 days. If you don’t pass the exam on your second attempt, you must wait 60 days from your most recent attempt before taking the exam again.

No more than four attempts are allowed within a 12 month period. You will need to purchase an new Exam Answer Sheet to retake a print exam or purchase a new Exam Access Code to re-take an online exam.
